X-Box 360
on: February 12, 2008, 18:14:07 PM
Ive been toying with the idea of getting an X-box 360 - pretty much solely for playing Guitar Hero II - but also any other of the array of games on there since I never get around to playing PC games much these days.

I had considered a PS2 but it hardly seems worth it, and the X-box looks like a good media center solution too, and has the possibilities of going hi-def for films...

Good idea?

Do I just need the core/arcade box or is it worth getting an elite uber premium or whatever for the HDD and other bits?

Should I get a barebones off ebay to save money on the console cost?

AFAIK theres no GH II on the PS3, or is the PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 games?

I specifically want to get GH II as I like the songs on there.

Edit: nevermind I see it can play it, the controller will be compatible too right?

Edit 2:

Thats a bit crap. Im not won over on the PS3 idea, unless anyone else has done this an knows it works.

compatability has now gone from the PS3 unless you can get the earlier 60gb ones.

At least your future proofing yourself with a Blu-Ray player, instead of dust collecting hd-dvd

If you have none of them then Id probably pick up the PS3.  I think the XBox is the better console (especially when mated to a Wii) but the PS3 has the Bluray player.  Ultimately I have all 3 and the XBox gets the most single player use, the Wii is unmatched when people are round and the PS3 for films.

But if youre only after Guitar Hero (as good on the XBox as the PS3), Singstar type games (PS3 probably better) and the bonus the PS3 is really the only sensible choice bluray player out there then its got to be the PS3.

Egg - you probably hate your 360 because its banned form live and your missing out on all the great content on there. I really dont see what there isnt to like about the 360 - if you liked your Xbox original its the natural progression. If you didnt like original - why buy a 360?!

Mines been solid, effecient and quiet since day one and I think the games have got better and better since its release. Love mine to bits. Ive played PS3 a good few times now at friends houses and its not a patch on the 360 plus its only got sh*t games (apart from a small number of dual format releases.)

I dont buy into all this blue ray / HD DVD bollox. Its a GAMES console and Im not wearing my drives out watching films...

Nige - Id be tempted to get one with HDMI (Elite or Arcade I believe) - I think in the long term itll be worthwhile. And get one new with warrenty - its worth the extra for the peace of mind.

yeah, egg was mod naughter and got banned so he is bitter, newer types of 360, better cpu, hdmi as standard, good games out from last year, a load of amazing ones this year. Last year was a stupid success in terms of gaming and the industry with 18billion made in the US alone and this years game line up (mainly because a load were delayed) is even stronger..

Rockband, GTA, splinter cell just to name 3.
You got the option of the hd player and if blu ray wins ms only have to make a blu ray player and your sorted.. You got the recent live update with all the new cool tweaks to the machine as well (which egg cant get :P )

Cheers sdp. Its not quite the same deal.

It looks like theres not much to find negative in the X-box to me. Im not fussed about the HD formats as I can easily buy a standalone at some point when the time is right. But in terms of the games the X-box definitely seems like the better choice and it means I can play Guitar Hero II and III with no compatability issues.

Whats the difference between the Elite and Premium, which is ideal for me to go for? Im not going to pay to play online or anything like that, but I would use live to update it as necessary.

Elite - Black, Hdmi, Bigger Hardrive, Hdmi cable Over the old premium with smaller hardrive no hdmi and white basically but newer Premiums have hdmi (not sure about the cable) elite had headset in, google should link a site with someone showing all differences in all versions I am sure

SDP while that is cool and I got it compared to rock band its poo

yes the content is that great that I didnt bother to unchip my box so I can access all those great demos, videos & picture packs.
If I was that concerened about Live, I would have bought a 2nd XBox.

Fact is, my xbox 360 has been unplugged & not switched on for about 6 months. Long after it got banned for live.
I preffered my ps2 to my xbox as well (both chipped) fwiw.

Thats fair enough I mean its each to their own at the end of the day. I just dont know what you expected when you bought it - the xbox 360 was EXACTLY what I expected it to be in everyway, and then some. I dont see how its a disappointment its what they said it would be. BTW if you havent used it in 6 months youve missed out on some quality games.

Nige - get an Elite - for the few extra ££s the extra HDD space and the little extras are worth it. Plus I said the same about paying to play live at first but was soon convinced to sign up - Xbox live is well worth the cash and somehow you do seem to miss out on something if you dont have it.

xbox live is a joke, there is simply no way I am paying for the pleasure of being able to setup a multiplayer peer to peer game :puke:

I have all 3 systems,

The wii is a party system, full stop, I havent switched mine on since November, and I have all ze games for it.

The xbox360 is my personal fave but I havent played mine for a while as this one hasnt had the drive flashed yet, the new falcon systems (any brand new one will be a falcon now) seem to be much quieter and hopefully more reliable. Another advantage is that some of the games are multi region so you can buy the Asian versions from play-asia for £25 when theyre brand new, including some notable titles like mass effect and PGR4 :ptu:

The ps3 is definitely one for the future, it gets very little usage from me however if recent reports are to be believed they are on the verge of busting that sucker open, if that happens the ps3 could really step into gear.

TBH I would be inclined to wait until GTA4 is about to come out, as speculation is around that both will drop their console prices to get those sales in

edit -> with regards to which system to get xbox wise, dont bother with the arcade as you really need the HDD to be futureproof (some games already take advantage of it) however I wouldnt bother with the elite unless you can get one really cheap, I personally wont be paying MS to watch content and dont need 120GB of space...

double edit -> I would avoid das eBay with regards to buying, you really need one of the new falcon chips, the others are simply not reliable (ive had 4 die on me)
