Where I am it snowed, thawed a bit and became ice, then snowed again. Bloody treacherous out - even crawling along the side streets at 5-10 mph is sh*t scary when all traction is lost. Thank god for having done a skid pan although even that can leave you helpless steering into the skid if the ice thickens and the tyres cant physically get any traction..

We had maybe 3 specks of snow today. Yesterday the ponds Ive been looking after over christmas were almost completely frozen over, today they were dethawed.

Im hoping they stay unfrozen for the next 48 hours as then my responsibility ends hehe.

Im probably gonna end up killing myself, but Im sorely tempted to have a short jaunt in the lake district and do some of the peaks, not really had any mountain experience before so doing it in this weather and this time of the year would be fun!

Really it is the same here the roads have asphalt and is quite dry. But by law we have to have them past 1st of dec.
The ones I have is the next best stud free there is on ice but mine are better on asphalt.

£ 280 for four of them and they last at least two years it is worth it I think. Your summer tires will last longer as well right ?
So the cost is not that bad.

it iced up here this morning, then rained for half and hour, then iced up again.  Driving is "fun" to say the least, and according to my thermometer in the garden its now -2.

That would be a good idea, but Ideally youd buy a set of wheels and tyres and just keep them till the winter months. Thats if you have the space.

Although in most parts of England it could be different conditions throughout winter. It could be quite warm one day (3 or 5degrees), that night it could be -1.  How well do snow tyres work on ice?

And Ive only seen 2 days of really bad snow/Ice since the start of winter. The rest of the time, its just damn cold. I just dont think theres much point to get snow tyres with the weather we have. I can see the point of getting them though.

They work well on ice (well not as studded tires)but one still need some winter driving experience.
But having them from mid december to end of februari
(in sweden end of march) will do fine and waking up going to work with 5-10 CM snow would be no problem :)

Dont all the studded tyres and stuff chew up the roads over there?
