People are still at uni? I thought the least they could do is let you finish in November, for study month due to the excessive one months work youve done since summer break :)

Of course, the very earliest you should return should be Feburary to allow you sufficient time to recover from the hectic Christmas period.

The rest of us meanwhile will enjoy a week off at Christmas and another 2 in the summer

:D

Actually to be fair, I have just started the working life this year, I commute 1 hour each way to and from work, and am there from 9 til 5, and you know what? I dont miss the uni life. Certainly dont miss coursework and exams (hiss, spit)!

to drag this thread just a little tiny bit closer to the original topic......

Im heading home tonight, 1.5 hrs by car (thank God I have a car, it would be 3+ on Public Transport), not too bad.

Of course Im a PhD so Ill be back on Monday, just popping home for the weekend. Uni sure is quiet when all the Ugrads have gone home.

Ive also just started working life this year, and while both uni and work have its tough spots theyre both pretty easy if you actually bother to get the work done. A lot of people who complain about their workload at uni/work just dont know how to manage their resources / balance work and play. Have fun and all, just get the bleedin work done.

Hell I spent most my last year at uni dossing, started my dissertation 8 days before it was due in bashing out 12k words and got 67%, while also producing a docu for the university and finishing off a 30k word consultancy project.

I suppose if Id worked hard throughout that year I couldve easily got a 1st class degree, but IMHO it means fud all unless your doing something like medicine! Personality plays a huge role in which ever job your going for. (I know a guy at MS who got a great job, then they found out he lied about his degree... he didnt have one! They kept him on anyways)

I spend half my day doing bugger all at work and still get praise!

Im not the smartest guy in the world - far from it, but knowing how to manage resources, expectations and your own public relations can go a very long way!

~ end of random rant ;)

edit/

As for the original question    Normally leave anywhere between 6-8pm, takes me an hour to get back by car driving through the hell that is London (tube would take 1.5hrs for my journey)

guess it depends what you do for work though

your average 9-5 prob isnt too stressfull & your average office worker probably doesnt work too hard - then again plenty of them havent been to uni or are just there as temps before moving on to other things.

But being self employed or working in a profession however tends to involve a bit more than just 9-5.

If you leave uni then become an accountant, solicitor, investment banker, junior doctor, software developer etc..etc.. then youll most probably end up working a lot more then simply 9-5 and youll be spending plenty of your free time studying too.

What about those of us who are up most nights coding for uni, then working part time to fund themselves through as well.

I work every day its not a 9-5 monday to friday job for me, I start at 9, then dont finish until 2 or 3am the next day.

Because of course, trying to do coursework with a heavy timetable and part time work is piss easy compared to the automation of 9-5 work.

Turn up... sit around... fag break... do what you always do and what you know with your eyes closed... then lunch... then back to doing what you already know and can do with almost no extra effort, in fact it becomes a challenge to motivate yourself to do it, then another fag break, then home at 5pm. So hard compared to what us students do of course you poor things.

I feel so sorry for you.

As for when im going home, probably christmas eve.. back here for the 27th, meeting friends for new years eve, and then back here for the 1st.

Uni finished today but Ive coursework to get done now before I start working more hours next week.

i waws pulling 35ish hours weeks through 3 years of uni, I needed to so i could afford to live.  Now im working full time its much more releaxed in some ways, however you do have certain things that are _much_ more pressure.  If your Uni Lecturer gives you 70% you get a 1st, if your employer gives you 70% he also gives you your P45.
