Im not down with all the newer phones about nowadays... Im still calling and texting from a Nokia 7210...

There is one thing I know and thats that i REQUIRE a long battery life with my phone - its on me almost 24/7 and its on 24/7 - If I had an iPhone id find myself never using any of its lovely features just to conserve the battery life so that I can use it for my phone calls and texting

do you talk more than 5 hours a day on a phone?

Bloody hell your bills must be worse than mine.

Notice that the phone isnte even 3G compatible.... just EDGE... so 2.5G not 3G.

Somewhat disappointing.

It will also be up against the Nokia N95 - arguably a better buy all round and is available now.

Iphone? I thanks you not.

It does not need it is the point, why the hell would you use silly 3g tech and slow speeds when its got wifi. Although uk is slow many US cities for example are forever having more wifi zones and uk is getting there and will be the norm in less then 3 years.
When your not in a zone you can pull off an email or get vital info per say but for the most part in a city area your going to be using the net via wifi and the service will only get better.

Reading an article us net companies are very keen in taking part in the mobile industry if such phones take off.
How it works is that you got your broadband provider, you may have your home phone with them as well, new element would be the mobile. You would have mobile service, call rates etc and you sign up to it but as part of that your broadband provider is wifiing it up around the country and since your mobile and home is with them you can tie in your net usage as being your standard net use chargers so basically its all in one
You could even do away with 2 numbers and just have 1 phone number for home but is your mobile or both and set up a redirect ability when your out.

Its the way things will go and you should be better for it having all your elements tied together such a way.

Id got it into my head that this phone was going to get a last minute announce that it had GPS built in.

The thing that made me think it is if you watch some of the demos it switches into map mode and has a dedicated navigate to here button.  The only way I can think it knows where here is is to have a GPS chip in it...

How definite are these specs?

Theyre making a huge mistake if they leave wi fi as the only comms method.  No matter how wide spread it becomes there will always be places you cant use it - private wifi networks, areas of non coverage out of the major cities etc.. Theres no way our sales/pre sales guys are going to take that over a 3G card which works pretty much everywhere (within reason) and doesnt rely on them having a wi fi connection at all times. Also many companies have a no wifi policy to strengthen network security so anyone onsite with these firms wont be able to get connection.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

My next phone will be an HTC Kaiser or HTC Touch, unless SE can pull something really interesting out of their arses in the next 6 months.

Iphone = fashion accessory, not useful tool.

LG Prada phone is pretty much the IPhone in other packaging.

wifi vs 3g.

3G is bloody fast. Enables video calls, and is a darn sight faster for browsing than EDGE. Also requires minimal effort on the part of the user.

Wireless hotspots are still few and far between in the UK. Sure in a city maybe better but when your in a field or anywhere other than in central suburbia you are going to be hard pushed to find an open hotspot.

Also having to stay within the range of said hotspot is a pain in the ass.

Im getting the HTC Artemis (O2 XDA Orbit... Artemis but with a sexy casing :D) at the mo, again not a 3G device, Grrr... but Ill live with it as it can do so much more.

if you haven;t got it already i really do recommend looking at the T-Mibile stuff.  They actually have a decent Data allowance, rahter than the pitiful 10Mb they give you.  My T-Mobile one costs me 12.50 a month for 3Gb fair usage, o2 wanted nearly £90 a month for the same thing!

Just to point out this is the US version, with very tight and ridged phone service, By the time it hits the EU it may loose some features and have 3g due to the poor coverage, who knows, they may deal with 3g as the service provider for all we know but wi-fi is certanly the way forward for the mobile phone

Jobs is arrogant.  I reckon theyll leave GPS and 3G off, and tell us we didnt want it to begin with.

Well, it will mean it wont be any good for phone provider 3 for a start.
Nowhere I know is WiFi enabled.. at least for free.

We dont have electric down our cricket club, let alone have wi-fi!

The norm within 3 years? maybe in 10years, but certainly not 3. Especially with all the health risks, etc. - If its the norm, then most places would have at least announced its plans by now.

Its an overhyped piece of crap imo.

3g isnt that slow... I can download at speeds of about 512k (about 35k a second)

3G isnt a service provider.

Three... is.

Wi-fi isnt the way forward for mobile phones at all. Wi-Fi is the way forward for pervasive computing, but not mobile phones.

3G data rates are astronomically fast. IIRC its around 3.2Mbit throughput depending on how many channels the operator has dedicated to your phone in a particular cell.

For roaming internet, and truely mobile telephony based devices thats damn fast. Wireless is crap on accounts of availablility.

Sure... I wouldnt buy a phone without wifi, but thats because I know I surf the net like hell at home, and set up emails to sync when im within the range of my home network. However to lose the option of 3G on what is touted to be one of the greatest phones evar... (added aaaaaaa factor :D), is a wee bit well.. its an oversight thats for sure.
