Saudi Arabia claim they can boost production to cover 1/4 of all new demand in the world, and that they could do so for 50 years

To me that reaks of were running at maximum production now and will use any smoke and mirror technique possible to hide it - theyre already blaming market conditions for not stepping up production. I reckon they cant - because theyre already at maximum

The yankees are going to suffer proportionately worse than us, they dont have our hefty taxes on fuel to deal with.

But it still might mean prices going up massively and that would encourage a world recession. If that happens then virtually everyone loses out.

The oil reserves are limited, I doubt if they could keep increasing production for the next fifty years to meet demand. Even if they did what about the environment? All that carbon might mean a global meltdown.

I read that Obama suggested removing the federal tax completely on fuel over the summer driving season

How about - build cars with better fuel economy for commuters

should do that over here... make fuel VAT exempt & add 10p to the tax, would wipe 10p off the pump prices, and give companies some kind of fuel cashback/rebate.
Its the VAT thats the real sting for the normal plod atm

You would still have to pay 7.5% Probably better to remove car tax and put that on fuel tax instead.

Remove tax on fuel and insurance and put road charging in place - 0.01p per A/B road mile and 0.05 per motorway mile would be fair I think

if they did that how on earth do you make it fair,

If its cheap enough  for the hauliers not to complain, then Joe bloggs would pay peanuts towards road up keep

keep, but if its enough to cover joes current road tax then the hauliers will go nuts and every thing, as in all goods and services would rise to cover the increase in fuel, most noticeably on perishable goods and low value bulky items, nurf people going on holiday around, and to the UK, possibly throw the economy into reverse

eh? hows that work out ?

vat is included in the "pump prices"......

theyd be better off putting VAT up on fuel to say 30% and reducing the other taxes on it to even it out..... would make a big difference to businesses who use a lot...

I was about to say the small independant petrol stations would complain about it, but theres naff all of them about...

and I was going to say itll help because itll tax the companies making it more seeing as they have a monopoly and theyr making ludicrus sums of money already... but then I realised theyd just put the price up to even it out anyway.... :(

McCain has suggested that, now Clinton is doing it as well. Obama did mention it but it was 18-24months ago and isnt following the others lead to re-iterate it now.

so then the guy in the small car pays the same as the guy in the 4*4

taxing at source is the fairest - should remove road tax completely tbh...

forget the funny ideas about fitting trackers to cars to charging people per mile etc... were already charging per mile when you buy the fuel in the first place and it is a lot fairer as engine size/efficiency is effectively already taken into account too....
