I dont know what it is about 3Dmark, or maybe its because I buy cheaper midrange parts, but it usually takes me about four years after a version of 3Dmark gets released to be able to run it properly

Me too, although this time Im running 3Dmark05 adequately now.

3d Mark is as much for people developing graphics cards as it is for end users.  Youre not really expected to be able to run them properly as a consumer.  Chips have about a 2 year lead time and 3 year from specs so youre always going to be 2 years behind the curve as its usually testing things that arent implemented yet in public cards.
