Agreed.  Vista 64 is not a patch on what was a nightmare with XP 64.

Absolutely no driver issues, it works a treat.  There is much more of a performance difference with Vista 64 then there is XP 64.

If you have a choice, go for Vista Home Premium 64bit, minimum.

im running a mix of OSen on the desktop machines as the moment.  The XP64 absolutely eats the Vista Business x64 install for speed and reliability.  Regardless what people think, XP64 and Vista64 are the same platform, but with a different UI.  They are both based off Win2k3 SP1.  Ive had zero driver issues with XP64 as well, ve had more issues with Vista x64 BSODing and locking up because it doesnt like the RealTek HD Audio chip on my motherboard.

Im finding it concerning how much the mileage seems to vary for people here - people I consider technical enough to know its not user error causing grief with the OS as I naturally assume when most people talk about Windows being crappy and bug-ridden.

Ive yet to switch over to a 64 bit OS, and Ive been seriously considering Vista as the next OS platform in stead of XP64, but at the moment its too hard to decide with the problems people talk about and Windows 7 being just around the corner. Oh yeah Alan you said its possible to go back to classic mode in Vista and turn off all the Fisher Price menu system right?

right click on the desktop / personalise / theam / classic in the drop down menu ;)

for classic start menu, right click on the task bar / properties / start menu tab / classic button ;)

Id also do, right click my computer / properties / preformance settings (bottom right corner) / adjust visual settings / click the best preformance button ;)

to turn off the daft security messages (UAC) control panel, (switch it to classive view, its much better) then in user accounts / turn user account control on or off / then turn it off !

and of course, start/run/msconfig  disable all the stuff in the startup tab, go into the services tab / hide all microsoft services / then disable whats left :-)

I did a few other things too, cant remember right now tho... Ill post back if i remember any of them :-)

maybe vista is faster than xp for me because i turned off all the fancy fista stuff ?

stick with XP64, youll keep recieving updates for it until 2k3 drops out of the support loop. Why put Vista on when its just a sidegrade not an upgrade?  If XP64 does everything you need then there is little point in moving to Vista.

As of about 30 minutes ago all of my machines are running XP or XP64 instead of Vista.  Last night was the final straw when non of the Unreal games would run on my lappy.  All I wanted to do was connect and play the server for a bit to see if it crashed or not.  Vista didnt let me move at any speed past "Creep" in any direction, but everything else worked perfectly!

Leon

My upcoming format will be putting XP64 back on my machine instead of Vista 32

Personally save money, stick with XP until the next one comes out. Vista still has problems.

I already posted the perfomance gains from it and the good things about it and links in another thread, Bad rumour that sounds like, Think you got it the other way around, it is the vista sp1 with all the issues like serious linked, more and more cropping up on web every day now and as with most ms things they wont all be fixed when it is a full release and be months before they are
