Mardoni

Got my 360 back today, looks like its fixed :)

They even threw in a new front plate :D

Deaths Head

I just purchased extended warranty for my 360, only cost Ã,£44.95 for 2 years or 24.95 for 1 year.  I went with 2 years :D

Mardoni

Im tempted to do the same, itll be the first time Ill have ever bought extended warranty :o

Deaths Head

With the 360 I think its a wise purchase, at least then if anything goes wrong you get a replacement.  If you dont that is Ã,£180/Ã,£299 down the drain and have to replace it or sell you games.

All you hear about are 360s failing.  I havent had a problem with mine since I got it (touch wood).

Mardoni

Youre lucky :)

Ive had to send mine back once already and I believe it might be going again soon too :s

Ive had no gfx output a couple of times on boot; I get sound but just a black screen. 2 or 3 reboots later and its fine :s

Rivkid

bah Ive never had to send my dreamcast back......
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

yes there was a known problem.

Its because some cd drives didnt have padding in them so it couldnt cope with disc wobble.  iirc it didnt show up because MS expected people would keep the consoles still but people apparently move them when theyre on and even knock them over.  The missing felt things mean the moving disc touches the plastic tray = scratches.

I thought all new XBoxes had the felt tho so may be worth suggesting he doesnt shake it around when playing :)

they both seamed to be fine when running cold .. but after a few hours and theyd warmed up theyd scratch disks ... i guessing something is expanding and pushing the lens or something into the disks

Ive got two 360s.  Both older 2006 consoles.  One does scratch the discs but only everso slightly at the edge in the same place/pattern. Doesnt bother me, its like its saying "ITS MINE, NOMNOMNOM"

Not bothered with any extended warrenties, as Ive opened both consoles.  Ones flash-banned and has RRODd in the past, but I fixed it. the other I changed the fans.  Im soon going to be swapping my flash-banned console for a fresh Falcon one, and then flash my current live machine.

it  used to scratch them in the middle of the disks generally ... that wouldnt make sense if it was wobble ... it would be at the edge .. used to make really clear rings ... even so u would have thought they would have sorted it out by now

AFAIK The ring of death can happen anywhere on the outer half of the disk, further in is less likely as it has to bend excessively.

Deaths Head

I read a rather good explanation of how the scratch happens.  player bangs something, despite beign scross room the 360 shakes slightly causing the very fast spinning disc to wobble and get scratched.  However, the scratch will only be long after the bang that caused it sinec it will be some time before the laser tries to read the damaged part of the disc or the user takes it out and wonders how their disc was damaged.

The discs are damaged by the laser head which is why its always scratched in a different area to where the lens is currently reading.

Actually, found the link after 2 seconds looking.  http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkpEluEFuyGnAwYfVT.php
