no thanks, our economy is decent enough not to have to join.    -)

Didnt do the south (Of Ireland) much harm - they have a smaller defecit, a GDP per person of 20% more than the UK, lower unemployment and consistently higher growth than us - all since joining up

Im no financial wizard but those look good to me!

Plus, it would mean I could go and get fuel without having to lift euros in their dodgy machines!

Big part of that is to do with the suspiciously low corporate tax rates though surely?

to echo the above comment

Speakers corner is that way    (on a side note, thats a rubbish smiley, could we have a better pointy one?)

Mark

couldnt tell you, i know sod all about it - just happened to hear those numbers on the radio today!

income tax there is higher, car tax is MASSIVELY higher - up to 1000 a year (and soon to be more), they have ludicrous VRT - The cost of living in southern ireland is much higher than the uk.

plus, theyre all gypos

Yeah, I know... it just irks me when theres plenty pushed on us we dont actually want or really need (biometrics, chip and pin, etc theres probably plenty of examples).

At least were finally phasing out cheques and transfers will be instantaneous soon

Feel free to come up with a better pointy smily if you like too

zpyder

Hands up who here will probably at some point try to put together the whole set just to see the whole image?

Some of these are "pointy" :D

Mongoose

mmm not totally sure thats the kind of "pointy" I meant Zpyder lol. Still very cool emoticons, any chance of bunging some of those in oh mighty Pirate Lord?

Thats like saying "why bother to do the jigsaw, the picture is on the lid"

/me raises hand

I like they fact they are going to be a more modern design but really who looks at the pictures etc on the coins? Now and again on the back with a new thing you go "ooh new £1" and then that is that. You really look at colour and shape normally.
I did not even know they were looking to do it tbh though, have to admit and thinking about it was it not a bit of a challenge? You have to do a design considering the etching etc that will not mess with machines that distribute them and also way the same again for use in machines? So any design would need to have that in mind making it quite clever?

LOL look at the guy who designed them..

I would have liked to be able to see all the designs, anyone know a source?

What would have been cooler, but would have taken lots more work and would ramp the manufacturing costs up, would have been them using the coat of arms but making it so that theres maybe a dozen or so of each denomination but of different parts.

This would have meant you could either arrange the coins (If youre sad like me) as they have in the pic, or go for sets of each denomination and stacking them etc so theres a little overlap.

That way the gimmick of trying to make the coat of arms would last a lot longer as thered be 5 different loads of coins and any number of combinations...

And not only that - it would require the replacement of every coin mechanism on every machine in the country...

Theres a limit to how big a change they can make and keep the same size and weight.

zpyder

It wouldnt require a change to the mechanism, the shape and weight of the coins would remain the same. The patterns would only change.

But as I said, I understand it would not be possible, just cool if it was :P

you could do it over several years, with the coins changing places each year. The date stamp changes every year so presumably they have to make a new mould anyway.

I agree it would never happen, but I also agree with Zpyder that it would be cool
