Is email important? More specifically - is the ability to search your email important?

If so - there is only one choice and thats blackberry.

If you can do with poor, basic email search the others are all fine.

Sam

I only use gmail. Any other format for email is a pale imitation. So I just need web access.

That not true now, a lot of these phones linked are launching in the next month or so and have big email push ability etc. The palm pre integrates everything. A contact is a profile and a notification can come from facebook, twitter, gmail, other mail, txt, mms...... etc. Samsungs integration int his regard is also impressive but then Iphone 3.0 software update is also impressive. I know you love your blackberry and it was one of the best at this for a while, you cant really use this line any more though.

Goblin

Hes not talking about the push functionality, hes talking about being able to search email. Even the 3.0 iPhone firmware only searches sender/subject, but I think the BB lets you do a full search including the body (right Mark?)

For most of us normal folks we dont need that, but if your life is lived in business email then the BB is still the only choice for now. And thats from a die hard Apple fanboy.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Must admit I have a HTC for work and its always pissing me off that I cant search the message body. For work its a really important function (for me anyway)
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

I swear I have seen videos of them search content of an email and then copy and pasting content once they did so. Palm Pre and the new Samsung can both search Everything. Palm call it synergy. YOu just type the keypad and it will search applications, then all content on the device from contacts to emails and then if nothing is there offer options to launch google, wikipedia etc.

I know what he means with search, with the amount of emails you get at work you need it, but most of the smart phones out very soon all have this, it is not a "over others" feature blackberry can hold too and from what I have seen of their up and coming phones they are going to start to struggle very soon.

Ive played with a few of the up and coming handsets, because we are going to have to support them at work.  My Pearl 8120 spanks every single one of them for e-mail.  Thats an Old design too, the newer ones are better, if a little more poncey.  The N97 offers nothing that the N96 doesnt except for the keyboard, Samsung havent worked out easy e-mail yet, and Windows Mobile is an abortion of an OS

Palms Pre as an unknown quantity at present.  It should do well, but its competing with better form factors.  If e-mail is your major driver then its Blackberry or dont bother.

Sam

I cant believe people still use non-gmail email !
Available anywhere in the known universe. Permanent archive, and the quickest search known to man.

Jaimz

G1 is (as you might expect) awesome for gmail, has all the features of the online client on the phone. It is surprisingly robust too seeing how flimsy it appears at first.

I agree, I havent used pop email for personal use for over 10 years. Yahoo Mail & then onto Gmail.

Are you referring to the keyboard being vertical from the phone while a lot of the others are doing the horizontal slide out keyboard.

Ish.  If youre keyboard slides out like that then it needs to be horizontal, because youre bringing all the annoying things that come with a slider phone, without bringing the benefits of a large keyboard.  Blackberry wins with vertical keyboards because its fixed.  It cant pop out in your pocket and wack a load of junk into the keyboard.

Ahh, then not worry as they have a spring curve slide out thing, Mentioned it in a few of the demos. Should not slide out in your pocket etc. It has like a two stage slide, only you actually doing it supposedly gets it going.

One of my old Nokia phones had the same thing, and it used to pop out in the pocket on a regular basis.

Yeah, never know really till you get your hands on a phone. The pre is the one I am going to get. The OS being webkits based means as a web developer I can make some cool apps out of it as well as use it for my work needs. No game support really for it, people will find ways to make them but it is not aimed at that market, a lot more towards the Blackberry end.
Flash will come to the phone by the end of the year of not at launch which is cool.
