Why would a web developer want to use firebug? A web designer might do but dont confuse the two.

Quote from: SamYes it still has a couple of issues but very few now, and it is fast and simple. I like it, I guess eventually itll take over as its google.

Nah, it wont and is not. Your a minority.
IE8 currently has more users. Firefox is now the leading browser and heading to 50% market share now, so the other comment above is rather amusing from ya :)
FF3.5 is faster then chrome and does and can do a hell of a lot more.
Any developer for example not using FF and web developer tools and firebug - ROFL!

You cant just make up statistics.

Say that in a developer community and get laughed at to be honest Sam. Developer and Designer like use firebug. You are great at Java but in terms of the web Sam you are really way way out of date.

Matter of needs isnt it? What would I use firebug for? I dont need to debug web pages. In fact most of my work doesnt even use a browser. I know youre new to the web arena, but the web doesnt entirely comprise of HTML and web pages.

Anyway, what about those statistics you made up? The page you just linked to says this, "These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.". I mean you deliberately picked a site used by developers, how silly. I wonder if the chrome developer page has a high percentage of chrome users  8-)

Me new to the web area? lol
Gah, not going there with you Sam. Your way off, I and others know you are so no point arguing. Deleted all I wrote, pointless.
In terms of the stats. W3 as you should know is both mother and farther of the web. Their stats are pulled from a lot of stats over the web, Not accurate, NONE are all us in web know this, you can only get an idea but things like the google lead IE6 Death code etc would not be about if stats were not used.
IE8 - Low adoption rates hence the adverts and marketing push and the crap about it being good are around at the moment.
The IE stats you can find about 80%, 90% market etc are also known through out to be false and how they are formed. Basically the flow from OS stats and MS based stats via the OS in terms of what is installed an false browser lists (IE being top but not set default browser etc)
But me being new to the web and you being more experienced you will know all this hey, just pulling our legs a bit.

Sam

From the site, you referenced,

"W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers."

And you said,

"W3 as you should know is both mother and farther of the web."

So therefore, you yourself are advising we take the position of the W3C and what they say is most people use IE and that their stats [the ones you pasted] are not representative of the internet as a whole.

I await your retraction or further evidence backing up your claim.

Beaker

OK, lets post up actual stats.  My own website which is a real cross-section of people from fairly high-end techs, to people who just about know where their computer keyboard is ::

MSIE (All versions) :: 34.2%
Firefox (All Versions) :: 47%
Safari :: 8.7%
Google Chrome :: 6.1%
Opera :: 0.6%

Can other people post up and compare?  My overall hits per month are hovering around 19k page views per day, with 1200-2300 uniques depending on the day of the week.

In my own sites case there are more people running MSIE 6.0 than Chrome, in fact twice the number.  Are you honestly surprised people still use firefox?

Nah.
This post just shows 1. Just talking smack as there is nothing else 2. Again showing you do not know as much about the web not really knowing what W3C is and who is part of it etc.

No point Sam, Will leave you to it. Not bothering to stoop to your low levels

This is what you will see Beaker.

Ie6 use will range from 8-9% on average but of course vary depending on the type of site/location but on average it will be around there.
IE in total is again about 30%-44% on average
Safari is 5% to 9% although often its around 5%
Google Chrome is being adopted very well, it will be nice when it matures. Averages range from 4-6%
Opera is indeed low, despite what people say and love about it. I have seen on average 1 to 4% but 3/4% average.

IE 6 is more then Chome but that is due to sheer use and the whole Not Auto update/IE7 incompatability

Mark

Developers and designers like firefox, because it was different to IE at the start of the current generation of web developers and it was fashionable to be different.

Google chrome will take over, as - even though it is full of bugs - it is simpler, and because it is owned by google.

In my line of work, theyre all crap, full of flaws and insecure. Because - theyre coded in high level languages with reams of re-used code.

All these pretty pictures and flash animations arent going to mean sh*t in a few years.

Walrusbonzo

Until recently I had IE8, Firefox and Chrome installed and used all 3 each and every day.

Conclusions....

IE8 is a bag of sh*t, slow and uses way too much memory.  In some cases well over 1GB and triggering use of my swap file.

Chrome is generally nice and fast, simple and I really liked it.  However, it uses way too much CPU time when displaying flash.  Around 10 times as much as IE8 or Firefox.

Firefox, its almost perfect, maybe just not as simple as Chrome.  Now Ive got 3.5 installed and it seems faster than Chrome ever did.

Chrome no longer exists on my PC, IE8 unfortunately stays.

White Giant

I still use IE7 and Im mocked for it (on here quite a lot!). I use it for my primary browsing, it does what I need, and resources arent an issue /hugs 8gb RAM.

FF is used for the more interesting sites, with a variety of security plugins. 3.5 is very, very snappy - and I havent had any security problems for over a year.

Tried Chrome, didnt like it.

Surely we are getting to a point where browser choice is simply a matter of preference rather than technical superiority? From an end users POV of course?

Im fascinated by the debate in this thread (doesnt happen nearly enough on TEK anymore!), Sam is well known to be da Java king and Mark is pr0 @ the web, with neXus being well up on net tech, but everyone has a different opinion, which is what we want on a discussion board!.

Either way, long live IE7 . . .

Something to calm everyone down :
