in other news... doing a charge back on my credit card, need to get a new OS still - yet have noticed that amazon are selling windows 7 still, retail version and from the actual site itself not marketplace... given that there is a free upgrade to windows 10 I guess the way to go here is spend £60-something on windows 7, get free upgrade rather than £100 on windows 10

I plan on getting a legit Windows 7 next year before the offer expires so I can get the free 10 upgrade.

actually just found the pro version for £108 and bought that - from amazon - AFAIK pro version of windows 7 upgrades to pro version of windows 10... so that saves £70 or so...

there were some third party sellers flogging it for £80 something but I'm not risking it with them...

well I've not got a pirate version per say - I've got an OEM version on a Dell DVD+ a paper product key with hologram etc.. that was working fine until recently when the background went black and a message pops up periodically from MS saying 'This copy of Windows is not genuine' - as presumably the seller has used the keys elsewhere

I don't care about Microsoft tracking what I do, it makes no difference to me... but I read something a few days ago (can't find link now) that said the end game for Microsoft tracking will see them being paid by film studios/music places etc.. to help track downloads - either by directly reporting to microsoft, or moke likely by sharing info with other installed programs / web pages etc..

not sure how real that is or not... but figured it's only 2 min to remove so might as well

As another slight aside, I reinstalled a legit copy of home premium on my gfs laptop as I'm selling it (in the hopes of upgrading to Windows 10 to possibly help it sell) - Windows update corrupts itself after installing SP1 and when I try to use the Windows 10 installer directly (after about 5 attemtps at fresh installs) it borks itself too or refuses to accept my genuine key as valid to upgrade, so my only natural conclusion is to now install a pirate Windows 7 and see if I can upgrade it.

were you installing lots of updates all at once ?

I've had a few did doing that

try installing SP1 first, guessing it includes a lot of the other updates because most of them dissapear after that

also.... there should defenatly be a tool you can run which will keep installing windows updates, restarting for you, then checking for updates again.... so you can leave it running for a few hours and forget about it.   drives me crazy doing a fresh install for people when I install all the updates, restart and then a bunch of new updates appear., then again, and again and gaian
