from a purely objective point of view religious affiliations and political affiliations are basically shared sets of views/beliefs only religious affiliations also contain the belief in a supernatural being(s).

If criticism/disliking of a religion is frowned upon then so should criticism/disliking of a set of political beliefs. Though tbh.. id wager that had he been called Gideon and just happened to be italian too the father wouldnt have had a problem - jews came from all over europe to Israel, new york etc.. the father could well have been german, austrian, polish or italian too

Dave, it depends on your description of racism. Many countries regard Jews as a race in order to put protective legislation into effect. From that point of view its definitely racist.
