iPhone 5

I was underwhelmed. They seem to have bought themselves back into line with the current S3 and One X generation of Android phones but not moved forward in any aspect.

A standard "bigger, faster, lighter" upgrade to the 4S.

I think you may have missed the maginitude of the updates into the package. And I think you over hyped it yourself in terms of expectation.
Until the first fold screen phone or holo projector phone takes that next big leap all phones are just interational better.
Being as light and thin as it is alone is impresive love or hate it, hardware information for me was not underwealming.

Take things like the wireless charging. Nokia has it baked in - Cool. But the tech watt to charge is not very high so they take a lot longer to charge. No quick blast charge and go in the day etc. It is cool but not practicle.
A lot of the andoid phones have NFC, but where is the real world implementation of that everywhere?

They realy locking down thier form factor and I think you will see Samsung for example do the same, not much to go unless it is just the sake of change. Until materials take the next leaps etc and things like the bendy screens become to that point to be viable, Nokia's new phones are not much visually different etc either.

For at least another 2 years in my eyes phones are not going to be that much different visually  from now and be itteration hardware improvements.

It's pretty underwelming but hey do they really care? People will still flock to them.

Retina display = yey... only x640 resolution? Boo.
Lightning Connector = Boo, huge amount of accessories now useless... MicroUSB connectors and old dock converters (forced on apple by EU law) is a small win but extra cost (£15 & £20).
No NFC? I don't see why they didn't. It may not be that much use at the moment but it is getting bigger and there are a huge amount of accessories coming out (speakers are one that comes to mind) that will be using it.

Most things people seem to be happy about are it's thinner and the rest is iOS6 which the 4s is getting the exact same treatment.

But people will get what they like. I'm stuck on Android due to things like all my stuff being on google and MicroUSB, HDMI, Expandable Storage, USB Host, Rooted stuff like terminal, access to edit hosts files for adblock etc... 90% of the consumer base couldn't care less about any of them.

It's getting a lot more popular, and it's chicken and egg really if all the manufacturers included NFC, NFC would progress faster than if no one adopted it and relied on separate cards, I guess they are waiting for it to progress before adopting it (new phone will be out in another year anyway)

Obviously the main shout is the 4G, although it'll drain your battery I expect and unless you are in one of the areas they are launching it you wont see the benefit (I am BTW :) )

If states are anything to go by 4G will be silly expensive when it comes out... it's not just a case of "oh I have a LTE phone so now my normal package will be faster" deal.

I think the main thing will be the increased data bundle sizes required if you actually want to use it the same as your wifi..

One of the first things I did when I got the S3 was disable the NFC. Seemed to slightly impact wifi signal, and I figured it was a needless drain on battery, no matter how small - I have nothing that needs to use it.

The screen is very slightly better than the S3 and One X in terms of DPI (312 vs 326) but its also 0.7" smaller.

I expect the lightness in weight is impressive technically but is 18g lighter than a One X impressive considering the smaller form factor? Similarly, 1.0mm thinner than the S3?

It is nice to see Apple still making quality items but I was hoping that they would improve on the current generation of phones, and pending excellent battery life or exceptional performance (Id be surprised if the A6 outperforms the S4 snapdragon) there's nothing new to see here.

Maybe we have spoilt in the past with revolutionary improvements but in my mind that was what helped justify the price tags. When its the same tech as current 'free on contract' phones it doesn't drive market innovation or justify its sky high prices.

Apple have ran out of ideas. When apple released new products in the past it was always the case of 'wow thats a good idea' but now all they can do is make things lighter and thinner.

Not a single interesting or exciting thing about the iphone5, its a longer iphone4s, may aswell be the iphone4gs or somthing.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/13/apple-aspect-ratio-patent/

So they won't change their aspect ratio to be 16:9 and instead come up with this to blur the black area so we don't notice it instead :P
