The snows easing up here now, nothing really sticking any more, not as worried as I was earlier!

On the down side I have a sneaking suspicion that I will be stuck at home for the start of the contract. I dont care what people say about driving skills, if you dont HAVE to drive in this weather you shouldnt, end of.

TBH I reckon your own ability to handle a vehicle in this weather doesnt make that much difference, its all them others that are the problem.

If I had to I could take my car out in this and be confident of myself and my car to get through, but Id rather not have some idiot who thinks 4x4 and traction control are magic answers sliding sideways into me.

Id agree you need to be careful of the others, but at the same time I dont think anyone can be 100% confident in their driving when the conditions are particularly bad. I mean, people could be the best drivers in the world and still hit a patch of black ice and lose all traction, no matter whether you turn into it or away or whatever youre still going to end up going whatever way the ice wants you to go? Someone could be walking on the pavement and slip and slide into the road...sure youre likely only driving at 20mph but emergency brakings out the question really isnt it? You could drive past people walking slowly at a crawl, but I doubt anyone does that for everyone they pass...I was sliding down dropped curbs into the road whilst stood still, the ice was that bad before christmas!

Hmm, seems Im pretty much the only person at work who doesnt own a 4 wheel drive vehicle... Not looking forwards to the uphill drive home.

In Salisbury we have 2-3 inches and I Cycled to work! Woot!

I said I was gona cycle, everyone thought I was mad.

Then I turned up dressed up in waterproof leggings, gaters, ski-gloves, waterproof top, fleece top, fleece hat, skid-lid and flashing lights on the bike. Now whos laughing, Im warm and dry sat at my desk, the rest are damp and cold. hah!

So long as you dont end up going over a patch of ice on the trip its all good and dandy!

Ive seen several cyclists fall off their bikes when cycling in icy conditions going round corners etc :(

I did fall off last week, on the ice. The last corner before home, on an ungritted side-road damnit.

Hit the ice, I still had balance, but no steering or brakes, realised in an instant I was in trouble and would be comming off. Simply had a moment to decide how to come off; keep going and hit the kerb? No thanks, dont want to flip over uncontrolled. So I just put my foot down and fell sideways, bit of a bump and dead leg but nothing serious.  8)

When my parents lived up north my dad skied to work back then when it was really bad in the 70s I think.

Im still wanting to turn our patio into an ice rink though, but my skates are too small.

That photo is indeed impressive.

Im currently debating whether or not to help my sister move tomorrow. They can do it without me, but would appreciate the boot space of my car. Im thinking sod it, if they absolutely needed my car I would, but as it is they just want to put some stuff in it as they dont trust the removal men 100%.

Hampshire seems shagged to me, the roads are terrible round here. Its the worst county Ive lived in for handling these conditions - they should have known from what happened with Basingstoke the other week that this is what would be coming. Im not going anywhere and living off my pretty good stocks until it settles down a bit, I definitely wouldnt advise you driving needlessly.

I drove home from work this morning on an unplowed road with 5 inches newly fallen snow :) just have to keep speed enough not to get stuck 30-40 MPH worked fine.
