Smoking Ban - initial thoughts
on: July 07, 2007, 10:26:32 AM
Cons -

- Sitting in the pub was not cool, ciggie & pint is like fish and chips - they go together.

- The place stunk like a boots perfume counter, and the greasy food cooking in the kitchen.

- It was really quiet out.

- Drink a lot more for some reason.

Pros -

- Easier to pick up girls, dunno why I guess cos half the lads are outside smoking? Keeps your hands busy too.

- Only had to wait 5mins for a taxi at 2:30am, normally its half hour at least on a fri.

- Likewise, quicker to get food.

- Smoke a lot less, its too much effort to go for a ciggie.

-----------------------------

I must admit I hated the idea at first, but Im kinda warming to it.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

The smoking ban came into effect up here some time ago and as a non smoker I cant stand it. All it means to me is that pubs and clubs now smell rancid, be it sweaty people or greasy food. Sure, the smoke smell was bad but now were talking the lesser of two evils and Id take the smoke any day. And most importantly it means non smokers now have to run the gauntlet of smokers stood outside of whatever the venue may be puffing away like chimneys.

Its been in wales for a while now. Way better environment in the clubs and bars to be honest.

I love it. Take now for instance, I have a chest infection/cold thing going on. Last night, sitting in the pub after work enjoying a few pints was bliss... walking out the door however past all the smokers left me weezing for about 10 minutes afterwards.

Makes me realise just how much crap I was forced to inhale previous to the ban. Even the smoker I was with mentioned how the pub is a nicer place.

Another plus is that the minging sticky wall residue left after smoking (disgusting) is now no longer a problem once they redecorate. No more yellowing walls and smelly upholstery, instead a nice clean environment.

Sure at the end of a working day you are going to get sweaty and there will be BO smells around, but I find BO less offensive. Plus side... at least BO isnt linked to cancer :)

May point exactly, My thery is that the fags covered up the smell of sweat and stale beer.
First the pubs/clubs will go mad on cleaning,
then they will realise its taking up to much time and money
Then they will choke everybody out with overpowering air fresheners.
Then some one will take advantage of this and intreduse the pub/club industreal air fresheners, witch in a few years will get banned because it contanes nastys that cause canser.
Then everybody who drank in a pub or club between 2007 and whenever they get banned will get nasty health problems just like asbestos did.

Its much easier for the women to spot the non-smokers, we make better, and far less agressive, partners on average. With half the guys outside puffing their lungs full of crap you dont have the same level of competition either. TBH its to everyones advantage except for those who smoke.

I dont mind a little BO, going into a pub which is a virtual smoke screen and your eyes water within one step of the door is my issue. One cafe I went into I took three steps in and only just got back out, I nearly choked. Thats why I havent been going into the pub opposite. Apart from it usually being stuffed full of chavs.

Wouldnt it have been better to advise him NOT to buy 20 bensons to make himself feel better?  :hunf:

Not really a fan of it. The only time I smoke is if Im drinking. They go hand in hand so well but now I cant unless I stand outside. The pub last night just completely lost its atmosphere. Usually its packed inside and the beer garden outside is completely full, but it was dead inside and all the smokers were crammed around the door to the beer garden due to the seats being wet from the rain!

I wonder statistically how this will affect the governments tax income from cigarettes..

I just enjoyed a Jose L Piedro in the back garden, but it would have been much nicer in the pub with a pint and a few mates around.

Dont you mean And been the biggest strain on the NHS for you?

The tax collected from fags wouldnt come close to covering the cost for the treatment of your cancers and other diseases. Never mind the amount thats being poured into research beforehand.

In my pub the staff spent 5 hours overnight with steam cleaners and wet n dry vaccuums and things to get the smell out, worked pretty well. The working environment is much, much better for non-smokers such as myself, and that was the point of the ban.

Lol.

I forget the exact figures but in an average tax year...

We cost £4 Billion per year in treatments.

We contribute £80 BILLION in taxes.

Now thats good value isnt it?...
